on
The Harvard Study of Adult Development: Studying Human Well-Being Over 80 Years

Robert J. Waldinger, M.D.
Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School
 
Summary of Lecture
The Harvard Study of Adult Development is the longest continuous study of adult life ever done.  For 80 years the Study has tracked the lives of 724 men from adolescence to old age and has now begun to study more than 1300 of their middle-aged children. Dr. Waldinger will discuss the importance of longitudinal research on human development.  He will also summarize some of the most important results of the first-generation study.  Finally, he will describe the purpose of the current 2nd generation study and discuss plans for studying the 3rd and 4th generations with special emphasis on development of adolescent and young adult identity and social engagement in a time of rapid social and technological change.
